Travelling Light

Last weekend we celebrated my boyfriend’s birthday in Liverpool. We had tickets to a Liverpool match, had dinner booked on Saturday night and as I had never been to Liverpool before, we decided we would go sightseeing on the Sunday.

When going away for 2 or 3 days I sometimes find it hard to justify checking in a bag and this time I made the tricky decision to stick with hand luggage and find out how much stuff I could squeeze into a teeny tiny suitcase.

I am usually dreadful at packing when I travel as I can never make up my mind about what to bring and always end up packing WAY too many clothes and shoes “just in case I feel like changing my outfit” or “just in case we end up going to a really fancy restaurant” as I never want to be stuck.

Going away on a city break usually involves a lot of walking around so I knew comfy shoes were an essential item. Secondly, the weather in Liverpool is quite similar to Dublin’s weather so I knew I needed something warm. A habit that I have gotten into when I travel is writing out a list of things to pack (I’m probably on my own with that one). I do it to try and minimise the likelihood of forgetting something, e.g. jewellery to go with an outfit etc.

I knew I couldn’t bring a completely different outfit for each day so I decided to revolve my outfits around black and grey jeans and a long black coat to stay comfy and warm. I brought cosy knits for during the day and for most of my walking around I wore black over the knee suede boots with a low block heel which doesn’t sound too practical however they are SUPER comfy and warm.

One item that made it to the top of my travel list was a pair of ankle boots which I had purchased a few weeks ago! These boots are lavender, velvet boots with pearl and diamanté detailing. They have a low to mid heel which are circular shaped. Velvet is everywhere this season and I really couldn’t wait to take them out of the box. They are the perfect piece to dress up any outfit and they look great on.

I began my search for some glitzy boots when the Saint Laurent Rhinestone boots came on the scene and broke Instagram. I knew I did not want anything as bling as them nor did I want to fork out that much money (which would be a good chunk of a deposit for a house!). When I spotted the velvet boots in Zara I knew they were the perfect amount of bling for my wardrobe and they proved very easy to wear.  Pairing quite a casual outfit with a pair of glitzy boots looks great, you only have to look at Kendall Jenner wearing her Saint Laurent boots with a pair of cut light denims and a white crop top or Rihanna pairing her’s with jeans and an oversized leather jacket to know that it works. I paired these velvet boots with a chunky cosy knit and grey skinny jeans.

In addition to velvet, cosy knits, in my opinion, are always on trend and are a wardrobe must have. Autumn Winter 2017 catwalks showcased, Lavin, Max Mara, and Balenciaga giving the nod to cosy knits which made them a key trend for Autumn Winter 2017.

I recently purchased a grey roll neck jumper from Zara, which until my weekend trip away, I wore around the house with a comfy pair of think black leggings with panelling down the sides and black Nike runners. At the weekend, however I went for a different look which worked well. Overall, this knit is so versatile and ideal for those days when you just want to be cosy.

The grey jumper, grey skinnies and velvet boots are all still available from Zara and I have listed where you can find them below. Also, if you do want to get the Saint Laurent Rhinestone boots without the price tag, there are some really good alternatives on the high street which I have included below too. These will certainly bring  any outfit to life however if you are after a slightly less “out there” look I have included other items below which may be of interest.
